The Small World Experiment

"54 boxes travelling around the world, meeting people and having adventures. This is their story and the tale of their journeys home."

This experiment is an attempt to look at the Milgram effect, otherwise known as the small world phenomenon.

It is said that all strangers can be linked through six degrees of separation. This project is to put this theory to the test.

We have released 54 little boxes to strangers around the world. Each box contains a piece of a jigsaw. The boxes are attempting to return to their owner Allistair J Burt who works in an architect’s office in Glasgow. When returned, the pieces will be reassembled and hung on our wall for all to see.

If you have recieved a box then please pass this package to someone who you think will be the best next step on its journey home. The only rule being that this person must be someone who you personally know.

The Art of the Storyteller

This project was a direct result of our travels around Scotland with an air-hostess trolley mentioned below. On the trip I became interested in the myths and legends of Scotland and collected as many as I could from people around the country. I then chose ten of these tales and created architectural monuments that explored the story through their form. Click on an image below to hear the tale and see the coresponding design. (Audio requires Realplayer.)

A special big thanks to everyone who passed me myths and legends. Please do keep sending more in. I'd love to hear tales set in all corners of the globe.

365 Days of Sky
And that inverted Bowl they call the Sky,
Where under crawling coop'd we live and die,
Lift not your hands to it for help--for it
As impotently moves as you or I.
Omar Khayyam ("The Tent-Maker"), The Rubaiyat (st. 72),

For every day of 2005 I took a photo of the sky wherever I was. The idea behind the project was to highlight how the view of the sky as the only visual constant that we as humans all share. It stands over us, and watches over us, through births, wars, holidays or our daily commute. It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you are – the sky treats all the same.

I was also interested in the fluidity of the sky. It may be the one constant that ties the world together – but it never remains the same. It is an ever changing, adapting and moving canvas onto which clouds and sun-shine make their marks.

[The piece consists of 365 photos in A4 brushed steel frames with crisp white mounts, fixed to the wall in 14 rows of 26. Total overall dimensions 2.9m x 7.7m ] I also intend to turn the piece into a short film. The below are a small selection.

[UPDATE: Sadly, my hard drive went kapoot and I have lost all of my sky images. I am currently trying to decide whether to pay the £900 for the data retrieval service.]
